Nashashibi—and we have already explained why. So beware, dear Muslim, of trying to understand the Quran in isolation from the Sunnah; you will never succeed, even if you were the Sibawayh of your age in matters of language. The case before you is illustrative: Nashashibi was one of the foremost linguists of this century, yet he went astray when he relied on his linguistic expertise alone and did not seek the Sunnah’s help in understanding the Quran; indeed, as you have seen, he even rejected it. Examples of such error are far too many to enumerate here; what has preceded is sufficient, and Allah is the One who grants success. Third benefit: the ruling on adding the word sayyidana (“our master”) in the Ibrahimic blessings (salawat Ibrahimiyya) or in the tashahhud (testification of faith during prayer). The reader will notice that none of the transmitted formulas contain the term of lordship (al-siyada). For that reason later scholars disagreed about the legitimacy of inserting it into the Ibrahimic blessings. I would like, therefore, to quote for esteemed readers the view of the hadith scholar Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani—one of the leading Shafiʿi authorities who combined mastery of hadith and jurisprudence—because many late Shafiʿis have departed from this noble prophetic guidance. Al-Hafiz Muhammad b. Muhammad b. Muhammad al-Ghurabili (796–835 AH), who was constantly in Ibn Hajar’s company and from whose autograph I cite, wrote: He (meaning al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar—may Allah prolong his life) was asked about the wording of sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ inside and outside the prayer, whether one deems it obligatory or merely recommended: Is it a requirement to describe him with the title of sayyid, such as saying, “O Allah, bless our master Muhammad,” “bless the master of creation,” or “bless the master of the children of Adam,” or is it sufficient to say simply, “O Allah, bless Muhammad”? Which is preferable: including the word sayyid because it is an established attribute of his, ﷺ, or omitting it because it is not found in the transmitted texts?
