to Muslim! This is an obvious mistake (*). Abu Hurayra has yet another report that is likewise unsound; we draw attention to it here. Al-Bukhari records it in al-Adab al-Mufrad (no. 93) through Ishaq b. Sulayman, from Saʿid b. ʿAbd al-Rahman—the freedman of Saʿid b. al-As—who said: “Hanẓala b. ʿAli related to us from Abu Hurayra that the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Whoever says: O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad …’ ” The wording is the same as the hadith of Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah, no. (2), except that it omits the phrase “innaka hamidun majid” (“Truly, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious”) in both places and adds: “and have mercy upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You had mercy upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim; I shall bear witness for him on the Day of Resurrection and shall intercede for him.” Its transmitters are those found in Muslim’s Sahih except for this Saʿid b. ʿAbd al-Rahman: no one declared him reliable apart from Ibn Hibban, and no one narrated from him besides his own teacher Ishaq. He therefore belongs to the category of the unknown (majhul), as al-Hafiz indicates in al-Taqrib by calling him “maqbul” (“acceptable” only when supported). Al-Hafiz states this explicitly in Fath al-Bari (11/133) after citing the hadith from al-Tabari’s Tahdhib: “Its chain consists of the transmitters of the Sahih except for Saʿid b. Sulayman—the freedman of Saʿid b. al-As who relates it from Hanẓala b. ʿAli—for he is unknown.” (*) The Shaykh—may Allah have mercy upon him—also attributes the hadith to al-Sifa as printed in Abu Saʿid b. al-Aʿrabi’s Muʿjam (79/2).
