- “O Allah! Send prayers upon Muhammad, and1 [upon] () his wives and his descendants, just as You sent prayers upon2 [the family of] Abraham.
And bless Muhammad, and3 [upon] () his wives and his descendants, just as You blessed4 [the family of] Abraham. Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.” (1)
(*) The two additional phrases have been taken from the printed edition of Sifat al-Salat.
(6) The present report is that of Abu Humayd al-Sa‘idi: they said, “Messenger of Allah, how should we invoke blessings upon you?” He replied, “Say: …,” and he cited the formula.
It is narrated by Malik (1/179); through him by al-Bukhari (6/317; 11/143), Muslim (2/16–17), Abu Dawud (1/155), al-Nasa’i (1/191) – and in his ‘Amal al-yawm wa-l-layla (164/59) – Ibn Majah (1/293), al-Tahawi (3/74), Ibn al-Sunni (124), al-Bayhaqi (2/150), and Ahmad (5/424). All transmit it from Malik → ‘Abd Allah b. Abi Bakr b. Hazm → his father → ‘Amr b. Sulaym al-Zuraki, who said that Abu Humayd al-Sa‘idi related it to him.
Ibn Majah, al-Tahawi, and Ibn al-Sunni do not contain the second and fourth additional phrases. In fact, the last of these gives only the phrase of blessing (tabrik) on the Prophet, without the wording of salat; I do not know whether this is how the report stands in his work, or whether it dropped out of our copy.
(1) Al-Hafiz remarks: “This hadith(*) has been cited to claim that sending salat upon the Prophet’s al (family) is not obligatory, because it is omitted here. The argument is weak: al may mean someone other than his wives and descendants, or it may mean his wives and descendants themselves; on either reading, the proof is insufficient to deny the obligation.”
