- “O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad, Your servant and Messenger, just as You sent prayers upon 1 the family of Abraham.
And bless Muhammad—2 Your servant and Messenger—3 and the family of Muhammad, just as You blessed Abraham—4 and the family of Abraham.”
(5) The report comes from Abu Said al-Khudri who said: “We asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you; but how do we invoke blessings upon you?’ He replied, ‘Say …’ ”—and he cited the formula.
It is recorded by al-Bukhari (8/432–433; 11/138); al-Nasa i (1/190–191); and, through him, by Ibn al-Sunni (124); Ibn Majah (1/292–293); al-Tahawi (3/73); al-Bayhaqi (2/147); Ahmad (3/47); and—according to my critical edition—by Ismail al-Qadi in Fadl al-salat ala al-nabi (p. 28, 1st ed.; p. 62, 2nd ed., Maktab al-Islami). All of them transmit it through various chains from Yazid b. Abd Allah b. al-Had, from Abd Allah b. Khabbab, from Abu Said.
The first additional phrase appears in one narration of al-Bukhari.
The second is found in al-Tahawi and likewise in one manuscript of al-Bayhaqi.
The remaining sources give, in its place, the third addition.
The fourth addition is reported only by al-Bukhari, Ahmad, and Ismail al-Qadi.
