“and bless Muhammad …” etc. The ḥadīth is sound according to Muslim’s criteria. Al-Nasāʾī also transmits it through Sharīk, from ʿUthmān b. Mawhab, but his version omits the words “and the family of Ibrāhīm” in both instances. Sharīk’s memory is weak, while Mujammiʿ b. Yaḥyā is more reliable and has a better retention; his report is therefore preferable. I have likewise found a corroborating narration from Zayd b. Khārija, the brother of Banū al-Ḥārith b. al-Khazraj, who said: “We said …” and so forth. Al-Ṭaḥāwī cites it in Mushkil al-Āthār (3/73) through Yaḥyā b. al-Mughīra, who said: Yaḥyā b. Marwān b. Muʿāwiya narrated to us, from Khālid b. Salama, from Mūsā b. Ṭalḥa, from him. All the transmitters are trustworthy except this Yaḥyā b. Marwān, whom I have not been able to identify. Al-Nasāʾī (1/190) records from it the wording: “Invoke blessings upon me, strive earnestly in supplication, and say: O Allah, send prayers upon Muḥammad and upon the family of Muḥammad.” Aḥmad (1/199) also relates it but says: “Then say: O Allah, bless …” etc., omitting the phrase “and the family of Ibrāhīm.” Both Aḥmad and al-Nasāʾī transmit it through another route from Khālid with a chain that is sound according to Muslim’s criteria; this is likewise the version found in al-Ṭaḥāwī (3/71).
