Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

…

When the verse, “Inna Allah wa malaikatahu yusalluna ala al-nabi” (Indeed, Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet) was revealed, the Companions asked, “O Prophet of Allah, how should we invoke blessings upon you?” He replied, “Say: …,” and he cited the complete formula, including the two extra clauses. This chain of transmission is sound (1). Both additions are likewise affirmed by al-Nasaʾi in another report that also goes through al-Hakam. Al-Tahawi records it via Sufyan, from al-Aʿmash, from al-Hakam, with wording identical to the narration of Yazid b. Abi Ziyad concerning the verse’s revelation, except that it omits the phrase “wa ala ali Ibrahim” (and upon the family of Ibrahim); this is the version found in Abu Dawud and others. Sufyan also related it from Ibrahim b. Muhajir, from Mujahid, from ʿAbd al-Rahman with essentially the same wording; al-Tahawi transmits this as well. It is therefore clear that the two additional phrases are both firmly established. Ibn al-Qayyim’s assertion in al-Jalaʾ (p. 198)—following his teacher Ibn Taymiyya in the Fatawa (1/160)—that “no authentic hadith contains the words ‘Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim’ together” is incorrect. This is a remarkable oversight—especially on the part of a hadith expert like Ibn Taymiyya—given that the wording occurs in al-Bukhari, to say nothing of the Musnad (2). (1) The same wording is reported by al-Humaydi (138/1 = 2/310) and by Ibn al-Sunni in ʿAmal al-yawm waʾl-layla (33), although they do not mention the verse’s revelation. (2) Here we have produced it with an authentic chain. This is, in truth, one of the book’s merits: its meticulous tracking of the various narrations and wordings and its effort to reconcile them—an undertaking, to the best of our knowledge, without precedent. All praise and gratitude belong to Allah.
