(2) The report is narrated from Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Abi Layla relates it from him, saying: “Kaʿb b. ʿUjrah met me and said, ‘Shall I not give you a gift? The Prophet ﷺ once came out to us and we said, “Messenger of Allah, we already know how to greet you with salam; how, then, do we invoke blessings upon you?” He replied, ‘Say: …,’ and he mentioned the formula.” Al-Bukhari (8/432; 11/127), Muslim (2/16), Abu Dawud (1/154–155), al-Nasaʾi (1/190; and in ʿAmal al-yawm wa’l-layla, 162/54), al-Tirmidhi (2/352–353), al-Darimi (1/309), Ibn Majah (1/293), al-Tahawi, Mushkil (3/72), al-Bayhaqi (2/147), al-Tayalisi (142), Ibn Mandah, al-Tawhid (68/2 = 140/323), Ahmad (2/241, 243), and al-Tabarani, al-Saghir (193) all transmit it through the chain of al-Hakam b. ʿUtaybah. A parallel narration comes from ʿAbd Allah b. ʿIsa b. ʿAbd al-Rahman on the authority of ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Abi Layla, and it, too, contains the two additional phrases. It is found in al-Bukhari (6/317), al-Tahawi (3/73), and al-Bayhaqi (2/148). Another supporting chain is reported by Yazid b. Abi Ziyad; Ahmad (4/244) records it with the wording: — (*) Al-Zubayr b. ʿAdi also relates it in Ibn Mandah, who remarks: “This hadith is unanimously authentic.”
