11. Hind—better known as Umm Salama bint Abi Umayya al-Qurashiyya al-Makhzumiyya (d. 62 AH); she was the last of his wives to pass away.
The Prophet ﷺ died leaving nine of these wives alive, by consensus—namely all those just listed except Khadija and Zaynab bint Khuzayma. For their individual biographies and distinctive features, see al-Jalaʾ, pp. 154–72.
(1) Pronounced with u on the initial dhal; derived from dharaʾa Allah al-khalq, meaning “God spread forth and brought the creatures into being.” The hamza was lightened through frequent usage. According to al-Jalaʾ (pp. 172–73) this is the soundest etymology. The term *dhurriyya* denotes a person’s children and their descendants.
Do the offspring of daughters fall under *dhurriyya*? Al-Shafi‘i and Abu Hanifa disagreed: the former included them, the latter did not. In one report Ahmad adopted a middle position, stating: “Anyone whose paternal lineage is severed—whether by a case of li‘an or otherwise—his mother assumes, for purposes of lineage, the place of both his father and his mother.” Ibn al-Qayyim, p. 177.
