Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

…

—“Whenever you invoke blessings upon me, say: O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad …” and so forth. It was narrated by Abu Dawud (1/155), al-Daraqutni (no. 135), al-Bayhaqi (2/146; 378), and Ahmad (4/119) from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, who said: “Muhammad ibn Ibrahim ibn al-Harith al-Taymi related to me—concerning the prayer for the Messenger of Allah when a Muslim includes it in his salah—from Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Zayd ibn Abd Rabbihi al-Ansari, from him.” Al-Daraqutni judged the chain sound and continuous (hasan, muttasil). Al-Hakim (1/268), after citing this very chain, declared it “sahih according to Muslim’s criteria,” and al-Dhahabi concurred. This verdict is incorrect, for Muslim only records Ibn Ishaq as a corroborating narrator, as has already been noted several times. Some scholars have also criticized this narration because Ibn Ishaq alone inserted the phrase, “when we pray in our prayer,” while other transmitters from him omit it. Ibn al-Qayyim documents the matter in detail in his work al-Jala (pp. 4–6). Indeed, Muslim and others report the hadith without that additional wording; it will be discussed shortly, God willing (see p. 922). As for the wording, “We are familiar with the salam upon you, but how do we invoke blessings upon you?” it is authentically established in several other ahadith, as will be shown below. The remaining group of narrations will also be mentioned in their appropriate places, God willing.
