Al-Daraqutni likewise related it (no. 136) through ʿAmr ibn Shimir—Jabir—ʿAbd Allah ibn Buraydah—and added: “ʿAmr ibn Shimir and Jabir are both weak.”
Although the individual chains of these reports are weak, their combined weight makes them usable as evidence, God willing, especially since they are reinforced by a second group of three hadiths:
(1) From Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah, that the Prophet ﷺ used to say in the prayer: “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad …” and so on. Imam al-Shafiʿi recorded it in al-Umm (1/102): “Ibrahim ibn Muhammad informed us; Saʿd ibn Ishaq ibn Kaʿb ibn ʿUjrah narrated to me from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla—from him.” Ibrahim ibn Muhammad is weak. Ibn al-Qayyim (p. 15) observes: “Al-Shafiʿi deemed him admissible evidence, warts and all, even though Malik and others criticized him.”
(2) From Abu Hurayrah, who asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how shall we invoke blessings upon you—in the prayer?” He replied, “Say: O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad …” etc. Al-Shafiʿi also transmitted it through the same teacher with his chain. It is further corroborated by
(3) The hadith of Abu Masʿud ʿUqbah ibn ʿAmr: A man came and sat before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while we were present and said, “O Messenger of Allah, we know how to greet you with salam; but how do we invoke blessings upon you when we pray—may Allah bless you?” The Messenger of Allah remained silent until we wished the man had not asked, then he said:
