from a man of Banu al-Harith, from him. Al-Hakim graded the report “sahih,” and al-Dhahabi agreed—an odd judgment, for the Harithi narrator is unnamed. Hence al-Hafiz says in al-Talkhis (3/504): “Its transmitters are reliable except for this Harithi man; his status needs examination.” (ii) Another narration from the same Companion states: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me the tashahhud just as he would teach us a surah of the Quran…” and in it occurs: “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad…” and so on. It was recorded by al-Tabarani in al-Kabir and by al-Daraqutni (no. 135) through the chain: Muhammad ibn Bakr al-Bursani—‘Abd al-Wahhab ibn Mujahid—Mujahid—‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla (or Abu Ma‘mar)—from him. Al-Daraqutni declared it weak, a verdict followed by al-Haythami (2/145), because of Ibn Mujahid, whom they both called “weak.” (iii) A similar report comes from Ibn ‘Umar. Al-Daraqutni (no. 134) transmitted it via Kharija ibn Musab—Musa ibn ‘Ubayda—‘Abd Allah ibn Dinar—from him, and remarked: “Musa ibn ‘Ubayda and Kharija are both weak.” (iv) A marfu‘ narration from Buraydah reads: “O Buraydah, when you sit in your prayer, do not omit the tashahhud and the invocation of blessings upon me, for they are the zakah (purification) of the prayer.”
