- The tashahhud transmitted from ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb:
He used to teach the people the tashahhud while standing on the pulpit, saying:
“Say: at-taḥiyyāt li-llāh (all greetings are for Allah), az-zakiyyāt li-llāh (all pure expressions are for Allah), aṭ-ṭayyibāt [li-llāh] (all good words are for Allah), as-salāmu ʿalayka… — and the remainder follows the tashahhud of Ibn Masʿūd.”
Al-Bayhaqi also records it (2/140–141, 377) through Abd al-Razzaq, from Mamar, from Qatadah.
Muslim cites the same chain, but without quoting the wording itself. I fear, however, that this version is erroneous, for Mamar alone—without the other pupils of Qatadah—reports it. Although Mamar is one of the trustworthy and eminent transmitters, he is known to have occasional slips, as al-Dhahabi notes, slips that have been excused in view of the great amount of sound material he transmitted.
5. Imam Malik narrates it (1/113), and from him Imam Muhammad (107). Al-Tahawi (1/154) and al-Bayhaqi (2/144) likewise transmit it from Malik, from Ibn Shihab, from Urwah b. al-Zubayr, from Abd al-Rahman b. Abd al-Qari, who said that he heard Umar b. al-Khattab on the pulpit teaching the people, and so on. This chain is sound, as al-Zaylaʿi (1/422) affirms, and its transmitters are those found in the Six Books; the extra wording belongs to al-Bayhaqi.
Al-Bayhaqi then reproduces it through Mamar, from al-Zuhri, without that addition. Mamar comments: “It seems that al-Zuhri practised it, for he taught it to the people from the pulpit while the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, were present in large numbers and none objected.” Mamar adds: “I too act upon it.”
Malik and others also relate a similar report from Aishah, as a mawquf narration, with the order of its parts slightly rearranged.
