- The tashahhud reported by Abū Mūsā al-Ashʿarī:
He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“…and when one of you sits for the final sitting, let the first words he utters be:
at-taḥiyyāt (all greetings), at-ṭayyibāt (pure expressions), and aṣ-ṣalawāt(1) (acts of devotion) are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity but Allah [alone with no partner], and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger. [These seven phrases are the greeting of the prayer]."
(4) Muslim, Abu Awana (2/227), Abu Dawud, al-Nasai, al-Darimi, al-Tahawi, al-Daraqutni, al-Bayhaqi, and Ahmad all record it through various chains from Qatadah, from Yunus b. Jubayr, from Hittan b. Abd Allah al-Raqashi, from him. It constitutes a portion of the longer hadith previously cited in full under the discussion of saying *amin*.
The first additional phrase is found in Abu Dawud and—in one of their versions—in al-Nasai, through the route of al-Muʿtamir b. Sulayman al-Taymi, who said: “I heard my father relate it from Qatadah.” This isnad is sound according to Muslim’s criteria. Al-Daraqutni also transmits it and comments, “A continuous, good chain.” Ibn Hajar’s statement in Fath al-Bari (2/251) that “this addition is established in Abu Musa’s hadith as transmitted by Muslim” is therefore mistaken.
The other additional phrase appears in Ibn Majah (1/292) through Ibn Abi Adi, who said: Saʿid b. Abi ʿArubah and Hisham b. Abd Allah narrated it from Qatadah; al-Nasai likewise reports it through Khalid, who said: “Saʿid narrated it from Qatadah.” This isnad too meets Muslim’s standard of authenticity.
(1) One recension reads al-zakiyyat (“the pure deeds”) in place of al-salawat (“the prayers”).
