“for whenever he says those words, they reach every righteous servant in the heavens and on the earth.” (1)
It is narrated by al-Bukhari (2/248, 255; 11/11)—the present wording is his in one of those narrations—by Muslim (2/14), Abu Dawud (1/152), al-Nasa’i (1/187), al-Darimi (1/308), Ibn Majah (1/290–291), al-Tahawi (1/154–155), al-Bayhaqi (2/138), and Ahmad (1/382, 413, 427, 431), all through the chain of al-A’mash, who said: “Shaqiq narrated it to me.”
The second addition appears only in one report of Ahmad, and its chain is sound according to al-Bukhari’s criteria.
The third addition is found in al-Bukhari, al-Darimi, Abu Dawud, and others; the fourth in Ibn Majah, with an isnad that meets the standards of both Imams.
The sixth addition occurs in one version of al-Bukhari and likewise in Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah, and Ahmad.
The fifth addition comes through the route of Mansur from Shaqiq and is reported by Muslim and Ahmad (1/413).
The first addition is transmitted by Sufyan ibn Uyaynah from Mansur; it is related by al-Nasa’i (1/187), al-Daraqutni (133), and, via him, al-Bayhaqi (2/138). Al-Daraqutni declared, “This isnad is sound,” a judgment Ibn Hajar also affirms in Fath al-Bari (2/249); it fulfils the conditions of the two Shaykhs.
The hadith has further chains from Abu Wail, recorded by al-Nasa’i and Ahmad, and Ahmad (1/413) also transmits another route from Ibn Masud with similar wording.
(1) From this narration the scholars infer that a plural noun in the genitive construct, or a plural made definite by the definite article, denotes universality, for the Prophet first said:
" فإنه إذا قال ذلك؛ أصابَ كلَّ عبدٍ صالحٍ في السماء والأرض " (١) .
