had done to them exactly what he had just done. It is reported by al-Tirmidhi (2/198–199), al-Bayhaqi (2/344) and Ahmad (4/248) through the chain of Ibn Abi Layla. Al-Tirmidhi remarked, “Some scholars have spoken against Ibn Abi Layla because of his weak memory.” Yet he is not alone in this route; it has corroboration. Al-Tahawi (1/255) also transmitted it from Bakr ibn Bakkar → ‘Ali ibn Malik al-Ruwwasi—one of their own—who said: “I heard ‘Amir relate it.” I do not know this ‘Ali ibn Malik; if he is the Basran, he is weak. 3) Qays ibn Abi Hazim relates the same from al-Mughira. Al-Tahawi narrates it through Jabir from him. Jabir al-Ju‘fi is weak, but he too is supported: al-Tahawi then cites the hadith through Qays ibn al-Rabi‘ and Ibrahim ibn Tahman, both from al-Mughira ibn Shubayl → Qays ibn Abi Hazim, with the additional wording: “If one of you is praying and rises from the sitting position, then if he has not yet fully stood up he should sit back down and no two prostrations are required; but if he has straightened up completely, let him proceed with his prayer and perform two prostrations while seated.” This chain is sound. The Prophet’s statement in its marfu‘ form is likewise reported by Abu Dawud (1/163), Ibn Majah (1/365), al-Bayhaqi (2/343) and Ahmad (4/253) through Jabir al-Ju‘fi from al-Mughira ibn Shubayl.
