both of them relay the report from al-Araj with the same wording. (It is fully documented in Irwa al-Ghalil, no. 338.) The second report is from al-Mughira ibn Shuʿba, transmitted through several chains: 1) Ziyad ibn Ilaqah said: “Al-Mughira ibn Shuʿba led us in prayer. After the first two rakahs he rose without sitting, whereupon those behind him uttered tasbih to alert him. He motioned to them to stand. When he completed the prayer he gave the taslim, performed two prostrations of forgetfulness while seated, gave another taslim, and said: ‘This is exactly what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did.’” It is recorded by Abu Dawud (1/163), al-Darimi (1/353), al-Tirmidhi through the former (2/201), al-Tahawi (1/255), al-Bayhaqi (2/338), and Ahmad (4/247), all through Yazid ibn Harun → al-Masʿudi → Ziyad. Al-Tirmidhi judged it “hasan sahih,” and that ruling is valid, but only on the strength of corroborating routes, because al-Masʿudi’s memory declined, and—as Ibn Numayr explained—Yazid ibn Harun heard from him after that decline. Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi, however, also transmitted it from al-Masʿudi; he included it in his Musnad (p. 95): “Related to us al-Masʿudi …” Imam Ahmad observed: “Al-Masʿudi’s confusion occurred in Baghdad; whoever heard from him in Kufa or Basra has a sound narration.” I add: al-Tayalisi was a Basran, so he likely heard it there. 2) Amir al-Shaʿbi narrated: “Al-Mughira ibn Shuʿba led us in prayer. When he rose after the second rakah the people uttered tasbih and he did likewise. After completing the remainder of the prayer he gave the taslim, then—while still seated—performed the two prostrations of forgetfulness, and thereafter informed them that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ …"
