that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw a man supplicating with both forefingers, so he forbade him and said, “With one of them—the right.” Al-Haythami comments in Majmaʿ al-zawaʾid (10:168): “Its transmitters are the transmitters of the Sahih.” Al-Tabarani likewise narrated it in al-Awsat with the wording: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ looked at a man who was pointing with two fingers and said, ‘Ahhid, ahhid (keep it to one).’ ” Its narrators are reliable.
A supporting report comes from Anas: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by Saʿd while he was supplicating with two fingers and said, ‘Ahhid, O Saʿd!’ ” Ahmad transmitted it; the tabiʿi in the chain is unnamed, and the rest of the transmitters are those of the Sahih.
Ibn ʿUmar likewise saw a man pointing with two fingers; he folded one of them and said, “Allah is but one God.” Al-Tabarani related it mawquf, and its transmitters are the transmitters of the Sahih.
(It has an additional corroboration in Ibn Abi Shaybah.) (*)
