and “the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to correct one another—meaning: concerning pointing with the finger while making supplication” (1).
He (peace and blessings be upon him) “would do that in both tashahhuds” (2).
He once “saw a man supplicating with two fingers, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, ‘Use only one (3) [use only one],’ [and he pointed with his index finger]” (4).
(1) Reported by Ibn Abi Shaybah, 2:123 §1 (= 2:231 §8429) and 6:88 §29679, with a hasan (sound) chain of transmission.
(2) It is narrated from Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr: “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat after two rakʿahs or after four, he would place his hands on his knees and then point with his finger.” Recorded by al-Nasaʾi (1:173) and al-Bayhaqi (2:132) through the route: Ibn al-Mubarak → Makhramah ibn Bukayr → ʿAmir ibn Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr → Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr. This isnad is sahih (authentic).
(3) The verb is pronounced with a kasra on the doubled letter ḥa. The doubling stresses singularity, derived from tawhid (affirming divine oneness); that is, “Point with one finger,” because the One being invoked is single. Its root is waḥada, but the waw has been changed to a hamza. I add: the common practice of some laymen after wudu of raising both index fingers while reciting the testimony contravenes the Prophet’s instruction—“Let those who oppose his command beware, lest tribulation strike them or a painful punishment befall them” (Q 24:63). We ask Allah to make us among those who follow his sunnah and are guided by his example.
(4) This material comes from the hadith of Abu Hurayrah: “A man used to supplicate …,” and so forth.
