(2/132) Through the route of al-Waqidi: Kathir b. Zayd transmitted it with the wording, “Moving the index finger in the prayer panics Satan.”(*) He (i.e., the editor of that source) then remarked: “Al-Waqidi is the sole transmitter of it, and he is unreliable.” Such, however, is not the case; as we have seen, al-Waqidi is not the only narrator. This additional clause is corroborated by the report of Abd Allah b. al-Zubayr, from his father, who said: “When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat for the tashahhud, he placed his right hand on his right thigh, his left hand on his left thigh, pointed with the index finger, and did not let his gaze move beyond the point of his finger.” Its chain is hasan. It is recorded by Abu Dawud (1/156), al-Nasaʾi (1/187), Ibn Khuzayma (1/355, no. 718), al-Bayhaqi (1/132), and Ahmad (4/3) through Ibn ʿAjlan, from ʿAmir b. ʿAbd Allah b. al-Zubayr, from his father. Al-Hafiz also attributes it, in al-Talkhis (3/500), to Ibn Hibban in his Sahih. Its original wording occurs in Sahih Muslim, as will be cited below. The first additional phrase comes by another route: Hammad b. Salama—from Ayyub—from Nafiʿ—from Ibn ʿUmar—who said: “When he sat for the tashahhud he would place his left hand on his left knee, his right hand on his right knee, form the number fifty-three with his fingers, and point with the index finger.” Muslim likewise records it, as do Abu ʿAwana (2/225), al-Bayhaqi, and Ahmad (2/131), and they both said … (*) Shaykh al-Albani, in Daʿif al-Jamiʿ (no. 2401), graded it “very weak.”
