(1) The supporting narration comes from Ibn Umar. Malik (1/111–112) transmits it through Muslim ibn Abi Maryam, from Ali ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Muawi, who said: ‘Abd Allah ibn Umar saw me fidgeting with the pebbles while praying. When I had finished he forbade me and said, “Do as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to do.” I asked, “How did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ do it?” He replied, “When he sat in the prayer he would place …,” and he mentioned the remainder of the wording. The same report is found in Muslim (2/90–91), Abu Awana (2/223), Abu Dawud (1/156), al-Nasa’i (1/186), Muhammad’s recension of the Muwatta (p. 106), and Ahmad (2/65), all of them through Malik with the same chain; likewise in al-Bayhaqi (2/130). _________ (1) Al-Humaydi adds in his Musnad (1/131), and Abu Ya‘la (2/275) likewise, with an authentic isnad from Ibn Umar: “It is madhabbat al-shaytan (Satan’s goad); no one becomes forgetful while saying this”—and al-Humaydi raised his forefinger. Al-Humaydi also relates that Muslim ibn Abi Maryam said: “A man told me that he had seen the prophets represented in a church in Syria, praying in this manner”—and al-Humaydi again raised his forefinger. I add: This is an extremely rare and curious piece of information, and the chain up to that unnamed man is sound.
