and he had performed the prayer in the same way once before this, when he fell ill. On that occasion the people prayed behind him standing, and he signalled to them to sit, so they sat. When he concluded, he said, “Just now you were on the verge of doing what the Persians and the Romans do: they stand before their kings while the kings remain seated. Do not act like that. The imam has only been appointed so that he may be followed: when he bows, bow; when he rises, rise; and when he prays sitting, then all of you pray sitting.” (1)
(1) It is reported by Bukhari (2/138, 467); Muslim (2/19); Malik (1/155); Abu Dawud (1/99); Ibn Majah (1/374); al-Tahawi (1/235); al-Bayhaqi (2/204, 261); and Ahmad (6/51, 57, 68, 148, 194) through the chain of Hisham b. Urwa, from his father, from Aisha, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fell ill, and some of his Companions came to visit him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed sitting, so they stood and prayed following his prayer. He signaled to them to sit …” (and the report continues).
The same event is also transmitted from Anas. It is related by the two Shaykhs, by Malik—and, through him, by Muhammad in al-Muwatta (113)—as well as by al-Darimi (1/286), Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi (2/194), al-Nasaʾi (1/128, 164), and all the other compilers who recorded the preceding narration. All of them relate it through al-Zuhri, who said: “I heard Anas b. Malik say: The Prophet ﷺ fell from a horse and bruised his right side. We visited him, and when the time for prayer came he led us sitting; we therefore prayed behind him sitting. When he concluded, he said, ‘The imam is appointed only so that he may be followed …,’” adding at the end the words “all together.”
Ahmad (3/200) supplies an additional chain for this report, and al-Tahawi likewise cites another isnad.
