[Standing up for the second rakʿah]
Leaning on the hands when rising to the rakʿah
Then, “the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would rise—supporting himself on the ground—to the second rakʿah” (*).
“And he would ‘knead dough’ in the prayer: he would lean on his hands whenever he stood up.” (1)
Whenever he ﷺ rose for the second rakʿah, he would open the recitation with: “al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi l-ʿālamīn” (“All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds”), and he did not pause. (2)
(*) Its documentation has already been cited under the hadith of Malik b. al-Huwayrith (pp. 816–817).
(1) It was reported by Abu Ishaq al-Harbi with a reliable chain, and the same meaning appears in al-Bayhaqi with an authentic chain. The hadith, “He would rise as straight as an arrow, without supporting himself on his hands,” is fabricated, and everything conveying that sense is weak and unsound. I have demonstrated this in Silsilat al-Ahadith al-Daifa, nos. 562, 929, 968. One esteemed scholar objected to my grading of al-Harbi’s isnad; I clarified the point in my book Tamam al-Minna fi al-Ta‘liq ‘ala Fiqh al-Sunnah—consult it, for the issue is important.
(2) This is a hadith of Abu Hurayra. It was recorded by Muslim (2/99), Abu Awana (2/99), al-Hakim (1/215–216), and al-Bayhaqi (2/196) through the chain: Abd al-Wahid b. Ziyad → Umara b. al-Qa‘qa‘ → Abu Zur‘a b. Amr b. Jarir → Abu Hurayra. The wording cited is that of Muslim and Abu Awana, while the other two state that he opened with: “al-hamdu lillahi rabbi l-alamin.” Al-Hakim and al-Dhahabi declared it authentic, and al-Bayhaqi agreed, adding: “This indicates that there is no pause before the recitation in the second rak‘a, and it is a sahih hadith.”
