The Resting Sitting

(1) The report goes back to Malik ibn al-Huwayrith, who would say: “Shall I not tell you about the prayer of the Messenger of Allah?” He would then perform a prayer outside its prescribed time; when he raised his head from the second prostration of the first rak‘ah (cycle), he sat upright, then rose, supporting himself on the ground. Al-Shafi‘i recorded it in al-Umm 1:101, al-Nasa’i in 1:173, and al-Bayhaqi in 2:124, 135 through the chain of Abd al-Wahhab ibn Abd al-Majid al-Thaqafi → Khalid al-Hadda’ → Abu Qilabah, who said, “Malik ibn al-Huwayrith used to come to us and say … .” This isnad is sound by the standards of al-Bukhari and Muslim. Hushaym transmitted a concise parallel version from Khalid: he saw the Prophet pray, and whenever the prayer was in an odd-numbered rak‘ah, the Prophet would not rise until he had sat upright. Reported by al-Bukhari 2:240, Abu Dawud 1:134, al-Nasa’i, al-Tirmidhi 2:79, al-Daraqutni 132, as well as by al-Tahawi and al-Bayhaqi; al-Tirmidhi and al-Daraqutni declared it sahih. Al-Bukhari also included it in his Sahih 2:241, and al-Bayhaqi 2:123, through the route Wahib → Ayyub → Abu Qilabah: “Malik ibn al-Huwayrith came to us and led us in prayer in this mosque, saying, ‘I am praying with you only to show you how I saw the Prophet pray.’” Ayyub continued
