and he would also recite both of them during the night prayer (1).

and its transmitters are reliable. He also counted Abu Hurayrah’s report among the interrupted chains. Imam Ahmad considered it preferable to make this duʿa, and Ishaq ibn Rahawayh said: “If he wishes, he may say it three times; if he wishes, he may simply say, ‘O Allah, forgive me,’ for both wordings are related from the Prophet ﷺ for the supplication between the two prostrations.” This is stated in Masaʾil al-Imam Ahmad wa-Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, transmitted by Ishaq al-Marwazi, p. 19. (1) The same wording is textually established from the Prophet ﷺ. I have found no hadith that confines it to the obligatory prayers or that leaves it unrestricted, yet logical analogy suggests that it is recommended in the obligatory prayers as well, since there is no real distinction between voluntary and obligatory prayers. This is what we have just quoted from al-Tahawi, and it is also the view of the other imams mentioned earlier, as reported by al-Tirmidhi.
