If he was referring only to this particular supplication, there is nothing to dispute.
But if—-as the context of his words suggests—-he intended any supplication between the two prostrations, his statement is incorrect. Ibn Nasr (no. 76) reports from Umm Salamah that she used to say between the two rak‘ahs, i.e., between the two prostrations:
“Lord, forgive, show mercy, and guide to the most upright path.”
Al-Maqrizi, however, abbreviated the isnad when summarising the work, so the chain cannot be examined (*).
This supplication is also transmitted as a marfu (Prophetic) report, but in general terms, without being linked to this specific posture: Ahmad records it (6/303, 315–316) through Hammad b. Salamah—Ali b. Zayd—al-Hasan—Umm Salamah that the Messenger of Allah used to say it. This isnad is weak.
Al-Haythami cites it in Majma‘ al-zawa’id (10/174) and says: “It was narrated by Ahmad and Abu Ya‘la with two good chains,” yet this is not correct for Ahmad’s chain, which contains ‘Ali b. Zayd b. Jud‘an, a weak narrator. Moreover, al-Hasan al-Basri is a mudallis and here relates with the ambiguous form “from.” Al-Dhahabi states: “Al-Hasan practised tadlis frequently; whenever he says ‘from so-and-so,’ the proof-value of the report is weakened, especially when it concerns those from whom it is said he did not hear directly, such as Abu Hurayrah and the like; thus whatever he narrated from Abu ….”
* Musannaf ‘Abd al-Razzaq (no. 2892) records that she used to say it both during her prostration and in her prayer; Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/534) also records it with trustworthy transmitters.
