16
2- “Lord, forgive me! Lord, forgive me!”
He is also cited by Ibn Nasr (no. 76) through the same transmission line, but his name there is accidentally reversed—very likely by a copyist—to read: Abd Allah ibn al-Harith al-Hamdani.
Al-Nawawi then states:
“Note that this supplication is recommended (mustahabb) by unanimous agreement of the Shafi‘i jurists. Shaykh Abu Hamid says: al-Shafi‘i does not mention it at this point in any of his works, nor does he reject it. He adds: It is a sunnah, on the strength of the above-mentioned hadith.”
I reply: Al-Shafi‘i actually adopted it, as al-Tirmidhi records, and the knowledge of one who knows is evidence against one who does not. After quoting the hadith, al-Tirmidhi says:
“Al-Shafi‘i, Ahmad, and Ishaq all hold this view; they deem it permissible in both obligatory and supererogatory prayers.”
2) The same wording is related in the hadith of Hudhayfa: the Prophet used to say between the two prostrations … and he mentioned it.
Ibn Majah transmits it (1/290): “Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Hafs ibn Ghiyath narrated to us; al-Ala ibn al-Musayyab, from Amr ibn Murrah, from Talha ibn Yazid, from Hudhayfa.” He also said: “Ali ibn Muhammad narrated to us; Hafs ibn Ghiyath, from al-A‘mash, from Sa‘d ibn Ubayda, from al-Mustawrid ibn al-Ahnaf, from Sila ibn Zufar, from Hudhayfa.”
The second chain is sound; every narrator in it is trustworthy. The first chain is likewise composed of trustworthy narrators, but it is disconnected. Shu‘ba, however, supplied the missing link: he narrated it from Amr, from Talha, from a man of Abs—whom Shu‘ba believed to be Sila ibn Zufar—from Hudhayfa with a fuller wording.
The complete version has already been cited in the section on the opening supplication (p. 268), along with the other authorities who reported it besides Ibn Majah.
