“Subhana rabbi al-azim” (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent). He would then raise his head and praise Allah as much as He willed. Next he would prostrate and, while in prostration, say: “Subhana rabbi al-a‘la” (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High). After raising his head again, he would recite between the two prostrations the supplication already quoted above. This wording is that of Ahmad.
Concerning the hadith, al-Tirmidhi remarks: “It is gharib (solitary), and the same has been reported from Ali.” Al-Hakim judges it “sahih,” a verdict endorsed by al-Dhahabi. Ibn Hajar supports it in Bulugh al-Maram (1/259 with the Subul commentary); yet in al-Talkhis (3/483) he notes: “Its chain contains Kamil Abu al-Ala, whose reliability is disputed,” and in al-Taqrib he describes him as “truthful but prone to error.”
In fact, the report is sound (jayyid), as al-Nawawi concludes in al-Majmu‘.
It is further corroborated by the practice of Ali to which al-Tirmidhi alluded. Al-Bayhaqi, with a faultless chain, transmits from Sulayman al-Taymi: “It reached me that Ali used to say between the two prostrations: Rabb ighfir li, warhamni, warfa‘ni, wajburni (Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, raise me up, and mend me).” Al-Bayhaqi adds: “Al-Harith al-A‘war also narrates it from Ali but with the wording: wahdini (guide me) instead of warfa‘ni.”
This Harith—namely al-Harith ibn Abd Allah al-Hamdani (with a silent m)—is weak in hadith transmission, as stated in al-Taqrib.
