Supplications Between the Two Prostrations

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would say in this brief sitting:

1- “O Allah – in another wording: O Lord! – forgive me, have mercy on me, [mend me], [raise me], guide me, [grant me wellbeing], and provide for me.”

At other times he would say:

(1) This is part of the hadith of Ibn Abbas: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say between the two prostrations: … (as cited in the main text). It is narrated by Abu Dawud 1/135; al-Tirmidhi 2/76; Ibn Majah 1/290; al-Hakim 1/262, 271; al-Bayhaqi 2/122; Ahmad 1/315, 371; al-Diya al-Maqdisi in al-Mukhtara; and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, all through the chain of Kamil ibn al-Ala’—Habib ibn Abi Thabit—Said ibn Jubayr—from Ibn Abbas. The alternative wording is preserved by Ibn Majah, al-Bayhaqi, Ahmad, al-Diya, and al-Tabarani. The first two additional clauses occur in Ibn Majah, al-Hakim, al-Bayhaqi, and Ahmad, while the first of them alone is also in al-Tirmidhi. The final addition is found in Abu Dawud, one of al-Hakim’s versions, al-Diya, and al-Tabarani. Al-Nawawi remarks in al-Majmuʿ 3/497: “The cautious and preferable course is to combine the various reports and recite all their wordings, which number seven,” after which he lists them. Ibn Majah alone adds the phrase: “in the night prayer.” Al-Bayhaqi and Ahmad transmit a fuller narration: Ibn Abbas said, “I spent the night with my maternal aunt Maymuna. The Messenger of Allah awoke during the night …,” and after recounting the hadith he said: “Then he bowed, and I heard him say in his bowing: ….”
