The obligation of tranquility between the two prostrations “ He ﷺ would remain still until every bone returned to its place ” (1), and he commanded the man who prayed incorrectly to do likewise, saying: “ None of you completes his prayer until he does that ” (2). He “ lengthened this sitting until it was almost equal to his prostration ” (3), and at times “ he would pause so long that someone would say, ‘He has forgotten.’ ” –––––––––––––––– (1) Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Bayhaqi with a sound chain of transmission. (2) This forms part of the well-known narration of the man who prayed badly, transmitted by Abu Hurayrah and by Rifa‘ah ibn Rafi‘. The words “None of you completes …” etc. are taken from that hadith, which the compilers of the Sunan and others recorded with an authentic isnad, as noted earlier under “Facing the qiblah.” (3) The statement is from the hadith of al-Bara ibn ‘Azib, while the following phrase is from the hadith of Anas ibn Malik. Both were cited earlier under “Rising from bowing” (nos. 698–699). Ibn al-Qayyim remarks (1/85): “This sunna was abandoned by most people after the time of the Companions. Thabit said: ‘Anas used to do something I do not see you doing: he would pause between the two prostrations until we said, “He has forgotten.”’ Whoever lets the sunna decide and ignores whatever opposes it pays no heed to practices that depart from this guidance.”
