He also has a corroborating report from the Companion Ibn ʿUmar. It is transmitted through the chain of Muhammad b. ʿAjlān, who said that Abū al-Zubayr informed him that he saw ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar: whenever he rose from the first prostration he would sit on the tips of his toes and say, “It is part of the sunnah.” The isnād is sound (hasan), and Ibn Ḥajar declared it authentic in al-Talkhīṣ (3/482). Al-Bayhaqī then reports—through Abū Zuhayr Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥudayj—who said: “I saw Ṭāwūs performing iqʿā, so I said, ‘I have just seen you doing iqʿā.’ He replied, ‘You did not see me performing iqʿā; this is the prayer itself. I saw the three ʿAbd Allāhs do it: ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar and ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr.’” Abū Zuhayr adds, “And I really did see him performing iqʿā.” This chain is authentic, as Ibn Ḥajar notes. Al-Bayhaqī also records—through Khalād b. Yaḥyā b. Ṣafwān al-Kūfī, from Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān, from al-Ḥasan b. Muslim, from Ṭāwūs—who said: “I saw Ibn ʿUmar and Ibn ʿAbbās performing iqʿā between the two prostrations, resting on the tips of their toes.” Ibrāhīm said: “I asked ʿAṭāʾ about that and he replied, ‘However you do it, it is sufficient: if you wish, sit on the tips of your toes, and if you wish, sit on your buttocks.’” (1) Abū Isḥāq al-Ḥarbī likewise reports in Gharīb al-Ḥadīth (vol. 5, p. 12/1) that Ṭāwūs saw Ibn ʿUmar and Ibn ʿAbbās performing iqʿā; its chain is authentic and follows a different route.
