Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

Rising from Prostration

Then, “the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would raise his head from prostration while proclaiming the takbīr,” (1). He also instructed the man who prayed incorrectly to do so, saying:

“No one’s prayer is complete until … he prostrates, letting his joints settle, then he says: Allahu akbar, and raises his head until he is sitting upright.” (2)

“At times he would raise his hands with this takbīr as well.” (3)

(1) Numerous hadiths address this point, and they have already been cited above. (2) Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Hakim, who declared it authentic; al-Dhahabi agreed. (For the full citation see pp. 189–190.) (3) Several sound hadiths affirm this raising of the hands. Among them is the report of Wail b. Hujr: “I prayed with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Whenever he pronounced the takbir (saying Allahu akbar) he raised his hands, then wrapped himself in his cloak, took his left hand with his right, and placed both hands inside his garment. When he wished to perform rukū (bowing) he brought his hands out and raised them; when he intended to rise from rukū he again raised his hands. Then he prostrated, putting his face between his palms; when he lifted his head from sujūd (prostration) he raised his hands once more, and he continued in this manner until he completed the prayer.” Muhammad—namely Ibn Juhada, as will be mentioned—said: “I related this to al-Hasan b. Abi al-Hasan, and he replied, ‘This is the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him; whoever wishes may act upon it, and whoever wishes may leave it.’” It was recorded by Abu Dawud (1/115) and, through him, by Ibn Hazm (4/91) with the chain of transmission of Muhammad b. Juhada.
