and, at other times, “he would pray on a khumrah (1) (a small woven prayer mat)” (2)
Muslim (2/171–172) and al-Nasai (1/198) also record the report through several chains from Muhammad b. Ibrahim with a similar wording.
Bukhari (2/237; 4/207, 226, 228), Muslim (p. 172), Abu Dawud (1/142–143), al-Tayalisi (p. 291), and Ahmad (3/7, 24, 60, 74) transmit it as well through various routes from Abu Salamah, with a fuller version.
The hadith is further supported—though in abridged form—by a narration of Abd Allah b. Unays, reported by Muslim (3/173) and Ahmad (3/495).
(1) Khumrah (with a damma on the kha and a sukun on the mim) denotes the amount of matting on which a person places his face when prostrating: a small piece of reed mat, woven palm-fibres, or other plant material. It is called a khumrah only when confined to that size, and the name derives from the way its threads are covered by palm fronds (Ibn al-Athir, al-Nihaya). In Fath al-Bari (1/342) al-Khattabi says that it is the small prayer rug on which the worshipper prostrates, and he cites the hadith of Ibn Abbas about the mouse that dragged a burning wick and dropped it on the khumrah on which the Prophet was sitting—an explicit proof that the term can also be applied to something larger than a mere face-sized mat.
The author adds: Bukhari records this hadith in al-Adab al-Mufrad (p. 178) and Abu Dawud (2/349) through the chain of Amr b. Talhah, from Asbat, from Simak b. Harb, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas. It continues: a spot the size of a dirham was scorched, whereupon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “When you go to sleep, extinguish your lamps, for Satan guides a creature like this to an object like that, and he will burn you.”
