Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

And at times he would prostrate in mud and water. This occurred at dawn on the twenty-first night of Ramadan, when the sky poured rain and the roof of the mosque—woven from palm fronds—began to drip. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then prostrated in the water and mud. Abu Saʿīd al-Khudrī said, “My own two eyes saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, when he finished the prayer, and on his forehead and nose were the traces of water and mud.” (1)

“and the prophets were sealed by me.” It is reported by Muslim (2/64); al-Tirmidhi (1/293), who declared it sound; al-Bayhaqi (2/433); and Ahmad (2/412). Ahmad also narrates it in the Musnad (2/501) through another, abbreviated chain that is graded hasan (sound). (1) The reference is to the hadith of Abu Saʿid al-Khudri, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to devote himself to retreat (iʿtikaf) during the middle ten nights of Ramadan. One year he remained in retreat until the night of the twenty-first—the night whose dawn customarily marked the end of his seclusion—then announced: ‘Whoever is observing iʿtikaf with me should remain for the last ten nights. I was shown the Night (of Qadr) but then it was made to slip from my memory; yet I saw myself prostrating in its morning in water and mud. So look for it during the last ten nights and seek it on each odd-numbered night.’ “Rain fell that night,” Abu Saʿid continued, “and the mosque roof was made of palm-fronds, so the roof began to leak. I saw with my own eyes the Messenger of Allah ﷺ leave in the morning of the twenty-first with water and mud upon his forehead and nose.” The hadith is recorded by Malik (1/296–298); al-Bukhari via Malik (4/219); Abu Dawud (1/218–219); and al-Bayhaqi (2/103) through the isnad of Yazid b. Abd Allah b. al-Had, from Muhammad b. Ibrahim al-Taymi, from Abu Salama b. Abd al-Rahman, from Abu Saʿid.
