(2) Yahya ibn Sa'id said: I heard Anas narrate the same incident. It was recorded by al-Bukhari (1/258–259), Muslim, al-Nasa'i (p. 20), al-Tirmidhi (2/276), al-Darimi (2/189), al-Bayhaqi, and Ahmad (3/110, 114, 167) through various routes from him. In the versions of Ahmad and al-Darimi the chain of transmission is only three links long. (3) Ishaq ibn Abi Talhah related: Anas ibn Malik reported it with wording similar to—but fuller than—the above. Muslim and Ahmad (3/191) transmitted it through Ikrimah ibn Ammar; al-Bukhari (1/257) also narrated an abridged form through Humam. Third report: 'Umar ibn Sulaym said that Abu al-Walid told him: I asked Ibn 'Umar about the origin of these pebbles in the mosque. He replied, “Yes; we were rained on during the night, so we went out for the dawn prayer. A man would pass over the gravel plain, gather some small stones in his cloak, and pray on them. When the Messenger of Allah saw that he said, ‘How excellent this carpet is!’ That was its first appearance.” Abu Dawud (no. 75) recorded it from Sahl ibn Tammam ibn Bazi, and al-Bayhaqi (2/440) from 'Abd al-Warith—this latter wording is his—both through 'Umar ibn Sulaym. Al-Bayhaqi remarked, “Its chain is acceptable.” Ibn al-Turkumani objected that this Abu al-Walid is unknown, a judgment also given by Ibn al-Qattan and al-Dhahabi. I add that al-Hafiz says the same in al-Taqrib; nevertheless, al-Diya al-Maqdisi included the report in his al-Mukhtara.
