turn my face away from the Fire; its breath has seared me and its blaze has burned me.’ Allah will ask, ‘If I do that for you, might you ask for something else?’ He will reply, ‘No, by Your might!’ He will then give his Lord whatever pledges and covenants Allah wishes, and so Allah will turn his face away from the Fire.
When he is led toward Paradise and beholds its radiance, he will remain silent for as long as Allah wills, then he will say, ‘My Lord, bring me nearer to the gate of Paradise.’ Allah will say, ‘Did you not give covenants and pledges that you would ask for nothing beyond what you had already requested?’ He will answer, ‘My Lord, do not make me the most wretched of Your creation.’ Allah will say, ‘And what if, once I grant you that, you then ask for something else?’ He will reply, ‘No, by Your might! I will ask for nothing further.’ Again he pledges whatever Allah wishes, and Allah leads him up to the gate of Paradise.
When he reaches the gate and sees its beauty, its freshness and delight, he will remain silent for as long as Allah wills, then he will say, ‘My Lord, admit me into Paradise.’ Allah will say, ‘Alas for you, son of Adam, how treacherous you are! Did you not pledge and covenant that you would ask for nothing beyond what you had been given?’ He will say, ‘My Lord, do not make me the most wretched of Your creation.’ Then Allah will laugh at him and permit him to enter Paradise. Allah will say, ‘Wish!’ So the man will begin to make wishes, and when his wishes are exhausted Allah will say, ‘Add to that such-and-such and such-and-such.’ His Lord will keep reminding him until, when his desires are completely expressed, Allah will say, ‘That is yours, and the like of it with it.’
Abu Sa id al-Khudri said to Abu Hurayra, ‘The Messenger of Allah said: “Allah will say: That is yours, and ten times as much.”’ Abu Hurayra replied, ‘I preserved from the Messenger of Allah only his statement, “That is yours, and the like of it with it.”’ Abu Sa id said, ‘Yet I heard him say: “That is yours, and ten times as much.”’
