We have adopted the corrected reading and its definition from the printed Sifat al-Salah (p. 149): “as-siyara: an enclosure made for livestock out of stones and branches; its plural is siyar (al-Nihaya).” The intended sense is a corral in which horses gather. (1) duhm: plural of adham, meaning black. buhm: plural of baheem, whose basic sense is an animal whose colour is perfectly uniform (al-Nihaya). Al-Qamus adds: “al-baheem: black; a horse with no markings, whether male or female; a black ewe; and anything absolutely pure, unmixed with another colour.” (2) agharr derives from ghurra, the white blaze on a horse’s face. muhajjal refers to a horse whose whiteness rises on its legs up to the fetlock—surpassing the pastern but not the knees—because those were the places of fetters. The term is not applied to one or both forelegs unless at least one hind-leg shares the marking (al-Nihaya).
