Standing
And he—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—would remain standing during it, in both the obligatory and the voluntary prayers (1), in obedience to the Almighty’s command: “And stand before Allah in devout humility” (2) (al-Baqarah 2:238).
(1) As for his standing in the obligatory prayers, some of the relevant hadith have already been cited. Concerning his standing in voluntary prayers, there is the hadith related by Hafsa, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ perform his subha (supererogatory prayer) sitting, until one year before his death. From then on he would pray his subha sitting, reciting a surah and articulating it deliberately, so that it became longer than a surah twice its length.”
Malik recorded it (1/157) from Ibn Shihab, from al-Saib b. Yazid, from al-Muttalib b. Abi Wadaʿa al-Sahmi, from her. Through Malik the report was also transmitted by Muslim (2/164), al-Nasaʾi (1/245), al-Tirmidhi in the Sunan (1/211–212) and in al-Shamaʾil (2/99), Imam Muhammad in his Muwattaʾ (p. 112), al-Bayhaqi (2/490) and Ahmad (6/285), all with the same chain. Muslim and Ahmad likewise narrated it via Maʿmar from al-Zuhri with this chain. A noteworthy feature of the isnad is that it contains three Companions in direct succession, each narrating from the other: al-Saib, al-Muttalib and Hafsa—may Allah be pleased with them all.
(2) That is, humble, submissive and lowly before Him. This injunction entails refraining from speech during the prayer, as talking contradicts its nature. Hence, when the Prophet ﷺ did not answer Ibn Masʿud after the latter greeted him while he was praying, he excused himself by saying, “In the prayer there is enough preoccupation.” (*) This is the explanation given in Ibn Kathir’s Tafsir.
