Yourself (1).
Then he also reported it through the route of Yahya ibn Ayyub, who said: “Umara ibn Ghaziyya informed me; I heard Abu al-Nadr say: I heard Urwa say: Aisha said …,” and he related the same wording, except that he omitted the phrase “la uhsi thanaʾan ʿalayk” (“I cannot enumerate praise of You”) and added instead: “uthniy ʿalayk, la ablaghu kama fiyak” (“I praise You, yet I cannot attain what You truly deserve”). This version is recorded by Ibn Nasr. The chain of transmission meets Muslim’s criteria, but Yahya ibn Ayyub’s memory is somewhat unreliable; al-Taqrib describes him as “trustworthy, though he sometimes errs,” so this additional phrasing may be one of his mistakes.
(1) The sentence acknowledges the servant’s inability to fulfill the obligation of gratitude and praise: no matter how far he goes, he cannot manage it. Rather, Allah is exactly as He has praised Himself. It is as though the supplicant were saying: this task is beyond human capacity, but You alone are able to praise Yourself in the way that befits You; thus You are as You have praised Yourself. See Tuhfat al-dhakirin, p. 106.
