“my nerves, my flesh, my blood, my hair, and my skin,” and he mentioned two additional items.
‘Uqayl ibn Khalid likewise corroborated the report, saying:
“On that night the Messenger of Allah uttered nineteen phrases of supplication. Salama said: Kurayb told them to me, and I memorised twelve of them and forgot the rest. The Messenger of Allah said…,” and he quoted the whole prayer, which contains the two extra phrases.
Muslim (2/181–182) and Abu Awana (2/314) record this wording.
Muslim—and Abu Awana as well (2/320)—then transmit it through another chain from Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Abdullah ibn Abbas, from his father, from Ibn Abbas: he slept by the Messenger of Allah, who awoke …; when the muadhdhin called, he went out to the prayer while saying …, and he reported the supplication in similar terms. Abu Dawud (1/213) and Ahmad (1/373) also relate it.
Al-Bukhari cites yet another route in al-Adab al-Mufrad (pp. 100–101) through Yahya ibn Abbad Abu Hubayra, from Said ibn Jubayr, from him, with the wording:
“When the Prophet stood for the night prayer and, after completing it, praised Allah as He deserves, the last of his words would be: ‘O Allah, place light in my heart …,’” and so on. The chain is authentic.
Accordingly, these two narrations agree that the supplication was made after the prayer had ended, whereas the first report puts it in the prostration; the most plausible conclusion is that the Prophet did it sometimes this way and sometimes that way.
As for the “light” (nur), it probably means guidance and success in doing good, a sense that encompasses all the limbs, because of its manifest
