(1) That is, he rested upon them. (2) The term comes from jafaʾ (aloofness, keeping one’s distance). One says jafāhu when a person withdraws from something and ajfāhu when he drives someone else away. See al-Nihāya. (3) Ḍubʿay is the dual of ḍubʿ (with the b quiescent). It refers to the middle of the upper arm, although some say it means the area beneath the armpit; by proximity, the armpit itself is sometimes called ḍubʿ. See al-Nihāya. (4) Reported from Ibn ʿUmar. Al-Hākim (1/227) and al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī in al-Mukhtāra transmit it through Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq—who heard it from Misʿar ibn Kidām, from Ādam ibn ʿAlī al-Bakrī—and al-Hākim pronounced it authentic, a verdict with which al-Dhahabī agreed. Al-Ṭabarānī also records it in al-Kabīr (cf. Majmaʿ al-zawāʾid 2/126), whose compiler remarks, “Its narrators are trustworthy,” and al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī cites it through this chain as well. Ibn Ḥajar states in Fatḥ al-Bārī (2/234) that its isnād is sound. Al-Zaylaʿī (1/386) points out that Musannaf ʿAbd al-Razzāq preserves it as a statement of Ibn ʿUmar: Sufyān al-Thawrī relates from Ādam ibn ʿAlī al-Bakrī, “Ibn ʿUmar saw me praying with my forearms on the ground and said, ‘My nephew! Do not sprawl like a beast of prey; brace yourself …’.” Ibn Ḥibbān, however, records it as a marfūʿ report in his Ṣaḥīḥ (section 1, type 78) with the wording, “Keep your upper arms (ḍubʿ) apart.”
