Al-Bayhaqi likewise records the report (2/113), as does Ahmad (3/115, 177, 179, 202, 274, 291) through several chains from Shuʿbah, who said: “I heard Qatadah narrate it from him.” Qatadah explicitly states that he heard it from Anas in the compilations of al-Darimi, al-Tirmidhi, and in one version preserved by Ahmad. The first wording cited above is Ahmad’s, transmitted through Bahz from Shuʿbah; the alternate wording is Abu Dawud’s, transmitted through Muslim ibn Ibrahim from Shuʿbah. ʿAbd Allah ibn Ahmad includes it in the Zawaʾid al-Musnad (3/279) via Sharik from him, and Ahmad also relates it through Yazid—namely, Ibn Harun—from him. Saʿid ibn Abi ʿArubah also follows Qatadah in transmitting it; Ibn Majah (1/289) and al-Nasaʾi likewise record this path. Further corroborations come through Hammam, Yazid ibn Ibrahim, and Hisham, all cited by Ahmad (3/191, 214); and through Humayd and Ayyub Abu al-ʿAla al-Qassab—whose wording is similar to that of Muslim ibn Ibrahim—from Shuʿbah. Ahmad also records these versions (3/109, 231), and al-Nasaʾi (1/166) transmits the recension of Ayyub. There is an additional supporting hadith from Jabir, marfuʿ: “When one of you prostrates, let him keep balanced and not spread his forearms like a dog.” It is related by al-Tirmidhi, who graded it sound, by Ibn Majah, and by Ahmad (3/305, 315, 389) through al-Aʿmash from Abu Sufyan from him—a chain that satisfies Muslim’s criteria for authenticity. Ahmad’s Musnad (3/336) supplies yet another route, narrated by Ibn Luhayʿah: Abu al-Zubayr said, “I asked Jabir—may Allah be pleased with him—about prostration, and he said…”
