2 – Maymunah bint al-Harith related: “When the Messenger of Allah prostrated, he would khawwa bi-yadayhi—that is, spread his arms—until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen from behind him.” Reported by Muslim (2/54); al-Nasai (1/172); al-Darimi (1/306); al-Tahawi; al-Bayhaqi; and Ahmad (6/332, 333, 335). All of them—except al-Tahawi and Ahmad—add: “And when he sat, he rested calmly on his left thigh.” She has another hadith immediately following (p. 752). 3 – ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbas said: “I came up behind the Prophet and saw the whiteness of his armpits while he was mujakhkh, having separated his arms in front of him.” Reported by Abu Dawud (1/143); al-Hakim (1/228)—and through him al-Bayhaqi (2/115); Ahmad (1/292, 302, 305, 316, 317, 339, 354, 362, 365); and al-Tayalisi (p. 358), all through Abu Ishaq from al-Tamimi who transmits his tafsir. This isnad is hasan. Al-Tamimi’s name is Arbida (with a silent r and a kasra on the b); he is truthful (saduq) according to al-Taqrib. A second route is given by al-Tayalisi (p. 356) and Ahmad (1/320, 333, 352) from Ibn Abi Dhiʾb, from Shubah, the freed-man of Ibn ʿAbbas: Ibn ʿAbbas saw a man in prostration with his forearms spread on the ground and said, “That is how a dog lies! I saw the Messenger of Allah prostrate, and I could see the whiteness of his armpits.” This chain too is hasan, corroborating the previous one.
