Yes; Shuʿbah also narrated it: “Mukhawwal informed me, saying, ‘I heard Abu Saʿd—a man from Madinah—say: I saw Abu Rafiʿ …,’” with wording to that effect, adding: “The Messenger of Allah forbade a man to pray while his hair is tied up.” Ibn Majah (1/323) and al-Darimi (1/320) recorded this version. Sufyan al-Thawri likewise transmitted it from Mukhawwal, but he did not give the man’s kunya; Ahmad preserved this wording (6/8, 391). The chain is weak because the unnamed man is unknown; al-Mizan remarks: “He is not known.” I then reconsidered and said: Abu Saʿd al-Madani is Saʿid ibn Abi Saʿid al-Maqburi, as Ibn Abi Hatim pointed out. He writes in al-Ilal (1/107): “I asked my father about a hadith (1) reported by al-Muʿammal ibn Ismail from al-Thawri, from Mukhawwal, from Saʿid al-Maqburi, from Umm Salamah, who said: ‘The Messenger of Allah forbade a man to pray with his hair tied up.’ My father replied: It is only transmitted from Mukhawwal, from Abu Saʿd [original text: Abu Saʿid], from Abu Rafiʿ. Saʿid al-Maqburi’s kunya is Abu Saʿd, and al-Muʿammal was mistaken; the report is actually from Abu Rafiʿ.” Accordingly, the defect is the discontinuity between Abu Rafiʿ and Abu Saʿd—for it is said that he did not hear from ʿAishah, who died long after Abu Rafiʿ. The missing link is probably his father, Abu Saʿid, as in the narration of ʿImran ibn Musa cited above. Allah knows best. (1) Al-Tabarani relates the report in al-Kabir on the authority of Umm Salamah; see Majmaʿ (2/86), where he comments: “Its transmitters are those of the Sahih.” Is this through another chain, since al-Muʿammal is not among the transmitters of the Sahih? Yes; it is, for Abu Hudhayfah also narrated it from Sufyan. See al-Tabarani, al-Kabir, 23/252, no. 512.
