Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

and he would keep his posterior(1) – that is, his backside – raised.

Thus, the Prophet ﷺ prostrated on seven parts of the body: the two palms, the two knees, the two feet, and the forehead together with the nose.

He ﷺ counted the last two as one part in prostration when he said:

“I have been commanded(2) – in another wording: we have been commanded – to prostrate on seven bones: on the forehead” – and he pointed with his hand to his nose(3) – “and on the hands,” in another wording, “the two palms,”

It contains no reference to the prayer at all. (1) The wording comes from the hadith of al-Bara’, cited a few pages earlier (p. 726). Al-Nihaya explains: “al-ʿajiza: the buttocks, a term originally used for women and here borrowed for a man; al-ʿajz: the rear part of a thing.” (2) Ibn Hajar notes: “In every isnad the word is vocalised with a ḍamma on the initial hamza and is in the passive form; the one intended is Allah, Exalted be He.” Because the first narration could be read as confined to the Prophet alone, we followed it—after al-Bukhari—with this version, which, as Ibn Hajar states, shows that the directive is for the whole ummah. The hadith that follows likewise supports this, for its wording is unrestricted and thus embraces every servant. (3) Ibn Hajar comments: “It appears that he made the verb ashar (‘to point’) carry the sense of amarra (‘to pass over’, with a doubled r); hence he governed it with ʿala rather than ila.” In the report of al-Nasa’i and others—mentioned earlier—Ibn Tawus said: “He placed his hand on his forehead and passed it over his nose, saying, ‘This counts as one.’” This version clarifies the matter. Ibn Daqiq al-ʿId remarked: “Its meaning is that the two—”
