facing the qibla with the tips of his toes. I then heard him say:
“I seek refuge in Your good-pleasure from Your wrath, in Your pardon from Your punishment, and in You from You. I extol You, yet I cannot encompass all the praise that is due to You.”
When he had finished he asked: “O Aisha, has your shaytan taken hold of you?”
I replied, “Do you not have a shaytan?” He said, “There is no human being except that he has a shaytan.” I said, “Even you, O Messenger of Allah?” He answered, “Even me; but Allah assisted me against him, so he submitted.”
Al-Tahawi records it in al-Mushkil (1/30); Ibn Khuzaymah (no. 654), al-Hakim (1/228) and—through al-Hakim—al-Bayhaqi (2/116) also transmit it on the chain: Saʿid ibn Abi Maryam → Yahya ibn Ayyub → ʿUmara ibn Ghaziyyah → Abu al-Nadr → ʿUrwah ibn al-Zubayr → Aisha. Al-Hakim judged it “sound according to the criterion of the two Shaykhs,” and al-Dhahabi agreed; see Sahih al-Mawarid, no. 406. I maintain, however, that it satisfies only Muslim’s criterion, for Bukhari cited ʿUmara merely for corroboration, as al-Dhahabi himself notes in al-Mizan.
Ibn Hibban also related it (cited in al-Talkhis 3/475), after which Ibn Hajar commented: “It is an authentic narration.” Ahmad (6/115) transmitted it as well, in an abridged form, through Ibn Qusait from ʿUrwah.
A copyist’s slip in the Shaykh’s manuscript printed “Abu Qusait”; the correct reading is “Ibn Qusait,” as shown in Tahdhib and Taqrib.
