and “he also commanded it” (1), and “he would spread the toes of both feet” (2), and “he would press his heels together” (3).
It was recorded by Muslim and others. (The second additional wording is found in al-Nasai, transmitted through Ibn Rahuyah’s Musnad, 4/129/2, and is also cited in Sahih Abi Dawud, no. 823.) Al-Nasai classifies it under two headings: (1) “Setting the feet upright in prostration” and (2) “Supplication while prostrating.” The text with its documentation will be quoted later [p. 769].
(1) A report from Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas states that the Prophet ﷺ commanded placing the hands down and setting the feet upright. It is related by al-Tirmidhi (2/67), al-Hakim (1/271) and al-Bayhaqi (2/107) through the chain: Wahib → Muhammad ibn ʿAjlan → Muhammad ibn Ibrahim → ʿAmir ibn Saʿd → his father. Al-Hakim judged it “sound according to Muslim’s criterion,” and al-Dhahabi agreed, but in fact it is merely hasan. Al-Tirmidhi noted that Yahya ibn Saʿid al-Qattan and other trustworthy transmitters narrated it from Muhammad ibn ʿAjlan → Muhammad ibn Ibrahim → ʿAmir ibn Saʿd without the phrase “from his father,” adding: “This version is more authentic than Wahib’s.” I respond: this is not a harmful defect, for Wahib ibn Khalid al-Bahili is reliable and firmly established—as al-ʿAjli affirmed—and both Bukhari and Muslim used him as evidence. His mentioning Saʿd constitutes an addition by a trustworthy narrator and must therefore be accepted. [Al-Siraj also recorded it.]
(2) Reported by Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi (who graded it sahih), al-Nasai and Ibn Majah. The verb yaftakh, with a dotted kha, means “to loosen them so that they bend, turning their tips toward the qibla” (al-Maʿalim, 1/169).
(3) Another narration from ʿAishah states: “I missed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was with me on the bed, and I found him prostrating with his heels pressed together …”
