(1) First hadith – Anas reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray facing Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). Then the verse was revealed: “We have certainly seen the turning of your face toward the heaven; so We shall surely turn you to a qibla you will be pleased with. Therefore, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque” (Q 2:144). A man from Banu Salima passed by them while they were bowing in the dawn prayer; they had already completed one rakʿa. He called out, “Be aware! The qibla has been changed.” So they turned around just as they were, facing the new qibla. Recorded by Muslim (2/66); Abu Dawud (1/164-165)—and, through him, al-Bayhaqi (2/11); Ibn Saʿd (1/242); Ahmad (3/284); and al-Hazimi, al-Iʿtibar (43)—all from Hammad, from Thabit; Abu Dawud adds: and Humayd, from Anas. (2) Second hadith – Ibn ʿUmar related: “While the people were at Qubaʾ …” and at the end of the report: “so they turned toward the Kaʿba.” Reported by al-Bukhari (1/402; 8/141), Muslim, Malik (1/201) and, through him, Muhammad in the Muwattaʾ (152); al-Shafiʿi, al-Umm (1/81-82) and, through him, al-Bayhaqi (2/2); likewise al-Nasaʾi (1/85, 122); al-Darimi (1/281); al-Daraqutni (102); and Ahmad (2/15-16, 26, 105, 113) through various chains from ʿAbd Allah b. Dinar. The wording reproduced here is that of al-Bukhari. The first additional phrase occurs in one of his narrations; the second is found in a different report, namely: (3) Third hadith – Sahl b. Saʿd said that the Prophet ﷺ used to pray facing Bayt al-Maqdis. When the qibla was changed, a man went to the people of Qubaʾ and found them performing the dawn prayer. He announced, “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has been commanded to pray toward the Kaʿba.” Their imam thereupon turned around until he and the congregation were facing the new qibla.
