—Al-Bayhaqi then cited the chain: “Al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn Mansur—nicknamed ‘Sajjada’—related to us; Abu Maʿmar told us; Abu Usama narrated from Misʿar* from Uthman ibn al-Mughira, from Salim ibn Abi l-Jaʿd, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: ‘It is disliked not to incline one’s palms toward the qibla when prostrating.’ This isnad is sound (hasan). Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Hafiz is Imam al-Hakim, author of the Mustadrak. ʿAbd al-Baqi ibn Qaniʿ is reliable, though a few critics voiced reservations; see Tarikh Baghdad 11/88–89, Lisan al-Mizan, and others. Al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn Mansur is also treated by al-Khatib (8/3–4), who concludes, “There was nothing objectionable about him.” He was one of al-Tabarani’s teachers, and al-Tabarani quotes a hadith from him in al-Muʿjam al-Saghir, p. 78. The remaining transmitters are trustworthy and occur in al-Bukhari’s corpus. (1) This refers to the hadith of Abu Humayd al-Saʿidi, mentioned a few pages earlier. (2) This is the hadith of Waʾil ibn Hujr, transmitted through Zaidah who said: ʿAsim ibn Kulayb narrated to us, saying, “My father narrated it from him.” The full text has already appeared under “Placing the Right Hand on the Left” (p. 209). Sufyan al-Thawri also passed it on from ʿAsim. Al-Bayhaqi (2/112), al-Tahawi (1/151), and Ahmad (4/317–18) record it through several routes. Wakiʿ comments: “He prostrated with his hands close to his ears.” * Ibn Abi Shaybah likewise relates it (1/237): “Yazid ibn Harun told us; Misʿar alone transmitted it.”
