(continuation) Opposing narrations exist, but none of them is authentic. We cite them here only to alert the reader so that the uninformed are not misled.
1. Waʾil b. Hujr reported: “I saw the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—when he went into prostration he placed his knees before his hands, and when he rose he lifted his hands before his knees.”
It was recorded by Abu Dawud (1/134); al-Nasai (1/165); al-Tirmidhi (2/56), who graded it hasan (fair); al-Darimi (1/303); al-Tahawi (1/150); Ibn Hibban in his Sahih (no. 487, Mawarid); al-Hakim (1/226) and, through him, al-Bayhaqi (2/98); and al-Daraqutni (131–132), all of them through the chain: Yazid b. Harun → Sharik → Asim b. Kulayb → his father → Waʾil.
This chain is weak, and scholars have differed over it. Al-Tirmidhi graded it hasan, while al-Hakim said, “Muslim used Sharik as an authority,” a view echoed by al-Dhahabi. This is inaccurate, for Muslim did not rely on Sharik except as a corroborating narrator, as several critical scholars—among them al-Dhahabi himself in al-Mizan—have made clear. Al-Hakim, and al-Dhahabi when summarizing him, often fall into this confusion, declaring every hadith transmitted by Sharik to meet Muslim’s criteria; I hope, God willing, to collect such errors in a separate study.
Al-Daraqutni remarked: “Yazid alone narrated it from Sharik, and Sharik transmitted nothing from Asim b. Kulayb except this hadith, and Sharik is not reliable in what he narrates uniquely.”
This is the correct judgment, for all agree that the hadith is unique to Sharik among Asim’s students. Others who affirmed this besides al-Daraqutni include al-Tirmidhi and al-Bayhaqi. Indeed, Yazid b. Harun said: —
