Descending into prostration on one’s hands: “He used to place his hands on the ground before his knees.” (1)
(1) This report comes from Ibn Umar. It was recorded by Ibn Khuzayma (1/76/1 = 1/318/627); al-Daraqutni (no. 131); al-Tahawi, Sharh al-Maani (1/149); al-Hakim (1/226) and, through him, al-Bayhaqi (2/100); and al-Hazimi, al-Iʿtibar (p. 54), all through the chain of Abd al-Aziz b. Muhammad al-Darawardi → Ubayd Allah b. Umar → Nafiʿ → Ibn Umar. Al-Hakim judged it “sound according to Muslim’s criteria,” a verdict endorsed by al-Dhahabi, and the grading is valid. Ibn Khuzayma also declared it sahih, as cited in Bulugh al-Maram (1/263).
Al-Bayhaqi pointed out a non-fatal flaw, saying: “This is how Abd al-Aziz narrated it, but I think it is only an error”—referring to its being raised to the Prophet (marfuʿ)—and added: “The version we have preferred is the preserved one.” He then produced, via Ayyub → Nafiʿ → Ibn Umar, the wording: “When any of you prostrates, let him place his hands; when he rises, let him raise them.”
Ibn Hajar observed: “One might say that the mawquf report is different from the marfuʿ one: the first stipulates placing the hands before the knees, whereas the second merely affirms placing the hands at all.” Al-Shawkani (2/214) commented: “There is no harm in al-Darawardi’s solitary narration, for Muslim relied on him in his Sahih, and al-Bukhari also narrated from him alongside Abd al-Aziz b. Abi Hazim.”
The next hadith serves as supporting evidence for this report.
